The 5 Main Types of Psoriasis and How They Differ

Psoriasis is not a one-size-fits-all skin condition. It can appear in different forms, affect different parts of the body, and vary in severity. Knowing which type of psoriasis you have is an important step toward finding the right treatment and managing flare-ups more effectively.

At Boyne Dermatology in Jacksonville, FL, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joy Boyne brings over 35 years of experience treating psoriasis and other skin conditions. She works alongside Emily Begley, ARNP-BC, a double board-certified nurse practitioner with over a decade of dermatology experience.

Recognizing the Different Types of Psoriasis

Psoriasis can appear in several forms, each with its own symptoms, common locations, and level of severity. Here are the five main types and how they differ:

  • Plaque Psoriasis: Plaque psoriasis is the most common type, affecting about 80% to 90% of people with psoriasis. It causes raised, red patches covered with thick, silvery scales. These plaques often develop on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back and may itch, crack, or become sore.
  • Guttate Psoriasis: Often appears suddenly as small, drop-shaped spots across the chest, back, arms, or legs. It is more common in children and young adults and can develop after a strep throat infection or another illness. While some cases clear on their own, others may develop into chronic psoriasis.
  • Inverse Psoriasis: Develops in skin folds, such as the underarms, groin, or under the breasts. It causes smooth, shiny, red patches that can become irritated by friction, heat, and moisture. Since it can resemble other skin conditions, a professional evaluation is important.
  • Pustular Psoriasis: It is less common and causes white or yellow pus-filled bumps surrounded by red skin. It may affect small areas, such as the hands and feet, or larger parts of the body. This type can be painful and sometimes requires prompt medical treatment.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis: Erythrodermic psoriasis is the rarest and most severe type. It causes widespread redness, peeling skin, and intense itching. Because it can affect your body’s temperature and fluid balance, it requires immediate medical care.
